IED – From Tactical Threat to Strategic Problem
Doron Pely

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have been a part of many conflicts around the world for decades. But following the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the Coalition Forces in 2003, IEDs have evolved from a tactical “nuisance” threat to a strategic problem – challenging the tactics, strategies and warfighting capabilities of established armies, and highlighting an upcoming sea change that will probably recast military doctrines world wide, changing their outlook, makeup and budgets for decades to come.

This world-changing trend is described, examined and analyzed in a new report: Global Counter-IED Markets and Technologies Forecast - 2008-2012

The report arrives at some surprising conclusions about the way the IED threat will evolve and the consequent evolution of counter IED doctrines, strategies and technologies. The report examines existing and evolving technologies and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of using each potential solution.

The report arrives at the disturbing conclusion that even if the conflict in the Middle East will subside, the threat of IED will remain. Furthermore, the report concludes that the U.S. and Western Europe are catastrophically under-prepared to deal with IED threats both in technological terms and in terms of population resiliency. Consequently, the report concludes that these very weakness will become a driving force behind a thriving, technologically focused, counter IED market, which is expected to attain a CAGR between 8-12% over the next two decades.

Among others, the new research report focuses on the following areas:

  1. Counter-IED Business Opportunities around the world

  2. Evolving counter IED technologies over the next 5 years - forecasted by tactical segments (e.g., Prediction, Detection, Prevention, Neutralization and Destruction, Mitigation)

  3. Market and technology evolution analysis by procurement, service and upgrade markets

  4. Market and technology evolution analysis by geographic location (e.g., India, Israel, China, Middle East, Central/South America)
